Internet of Things Shaping Travel & Hospitality Industry

Internet of things (IoT) enabled systems are being increasingly used across various sectors in the present day; but nowhere are they more evident than in the travel and hospitality segment. The travel industry leads the world in IoT investment with carriers, hotels, travel management companies and corporate travelers – all realizing the crucial impact IoT has in adding value to their efforts. Internet of things as we know is the network of physical devices, each with its own IP address, enabling internet connectivity and communication between these devices and various other internet enabled objects or systems, without the need for any human interaction. Whether it is allowing for a key- less entry or exit to hotel rooms, switching on the fridge, air conditioner or TV before entering room or helping tourists find their way around a place, IoT is streamlining the end operations of hotels, resorts, airlines, car rental business etc. Potential of IoT in travel industry The travel industry is acknowledged to be the largest and the most competitive industry in the world where the demand for innovative products and services at the cheapest rates is universal. Moreover, in an effort to satisfy this demand, travel industry has moved fast in to adopting IoT in to their everyday operations and helped increase efficiency levels. We will soon be witnessing a scenario where dozens of devices such as air conditioners, water chillers, fridges, bathroom doors, lights, thermostats etc are put in to each hotel room with IoT capabilities. IoT enabled system knows when a hotel room is vacant and will then adjust temperature to reduce energy consumption. It will also facilitate adjusting lights, room temperature and switching on the TV without leaving your bed. In a survey of 200 airlines that IT executives conducted in March 2015, it was revealed that 86% of the people surveyed believed that IoT would deliver exciting and clear benefits in the next 3 years, with 37% of people already having allocated budget. Navigation becomes easy You generally experience long queues at airports while accessing several types of facilities. Bringing IoT in the picture will help provide a secured connection from where customers can access the several facilities provided at the airport. Delays at major US airports alone are projected to cost up to $200 billion by 2020, according to World Economic Forum report. Miami airport in USA uses about 400 IoT sensors that helps travelers navigate through their respective smart phones and find restaurants, bars, cash conversion facilities etc. Quicker check in IoT allows for quicker check- in at airports eliminating all unnecessary waiting time. Dubai airport has smart gates, which through facial and retinal recognition detects traveler’s information. For travelers that have already done the biometric registration, the entire process takes less than 20 seconds, allowing for quicker check- in. Eliminating risk of baggage lost in transit The induction of IoT will prove a great help in tracking missing articles such as suitcases and other pieces of luggage. IoT makes it possible to track your bag from a smartphone app or even the bags tracking your location. With electronic sensors on luggage, all luggage movements can be tracked and there will not arise the possibility of lost baggage. Travel industry worldwide is implementing the internet of things (Iot) process in a big way as IoT helps travelers save time, effort and money, making the life of a traveler all the more easy and convenient apart from providing them with a pleasant travel experience.
