Is Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence a Blessing or Curse

Artificial intelligence and machine learning is changing the nature of everything from jobs and the economy to speech recognition, visual perception, translation, and even the decision making processes. At the basic level, artificial intelligence is a robotic machine that can think intelligently and creatively and act in the manner of a human. Artificial intelligence finds patterns in the available data and makes predictions. It is particularly effective in situations where deep and predictive insights need to be uncovered from data sets that are large, diverse and fast changing and outperforms traditional methods on accuracy, scale and speed. Though artificial intelligence has bestowed us with immense benefits, it has also received its fair share of criticism and that too from some very eminent personalities. Renowned scientist Stephen Hawking has warned that the development of artificial intelligence may lead to the end of the human race. Elon Musk also viewed it similarly and suggested that artificial intelligence may turn out to be a demon that could pose the biggest existential threat to the human race. But it should be realized that the positive side of artificial intelligence offers far more promises with technological advancements taking place at a fast pace. Let us now take a peep in to some of the common benefits that AI brings to the table. Dealing with mundane tasks One of the major advantages of artificial intelligence is its potential to do mundane tasks that were hitherto performed by humans only. Displaced workers can be relocated to jobs that require more creativity and intelligence and this increases the productivity level of the organization. Better data analysis and improved economic decisions Artificial intelligence provides management with better inputs for decision-making processes using the vast amount of data that it has. Using cognitive technologies artificial intelligence can help managements take better-informed decisions that will help the business growth of the company Medical diagnosis & treatment options Artificial intelligence is being increasingly employed in medical diagnosis and research. AI is able to read breast cancer pathology reports and suggest treatment options after analyzing all clinical findings. You can also lessen the risks you expose humans in the name of research. Job Losses However, AI also has its demerits . Experts warn that machines containing AI will replace labor in large numbers and will render huge working population redundant. There are many who worry that advances in AI could destroy millions of jobs. A world Economic Forum study in 2016 predicted that around 5.1 million jobs will be lost to artificial intelligence over the next five years, across 15 countries. Robots not taking jobs away but refining However, experience tells us that after the initial resistance has settled down, every new technology has created more jobs than it has destroyed. Replacing bank tellers with ATMs made it cheaper to open new branches, creating new jobs in sales & customer service. Nevertheless, some argue that robots are not taking jobs away; but refining them. According to Former Infosys CEO Nandan Nilekani, the point of automation is not about replacing people, it is about amplifying people and enabling them to focus on the work only people can do. Artificial intelligence requires training to recognize patterns of data and put them in to context and humans remain key in that process. Humans supply inputs, telling the artificial intelligence system how to properly interpret the data so that it can produce the correct outputs. According to Jaron Lanier “people are still needed; it’s just that they are needed in a new way”
