Artificial Intelligence Changing Web Design Practices

Web designers presently opt for a responsive web design as it allows for the content and imagery to resize according to the type and size of the device being used. However, the time has come to start building sites automatically after understanding the site content and user behavior through the process of artificial intelligence system engineering. We know that technological developments in the artificial intelligence space has helped it perform technological wonders. Innumerable number of functions, mostly of a routine nature, are being presently performed by artificial intelligence chat bots. In areas such as finance, banking, healthcare, transportation, vehicle assembly etc, the use of artificial intelligence is rather wide spread. Though a late starter, the web design industry is also not far behind. It has started to adopt the artificial intelligence technology to deliver visually appealing, user friendly and customized websites. A time has come where websites are slowly coming to design themselves in response to usage patterns. Users presently expect personalization at every level .The induction of artificial intelligence in to the web design process has meant that the site will be designed after analyzing the content to provide the best layouts, colors, fonts etc. According to Nick Dank from UX magazine, “the move from handcrafting each page of a website to automated personalization based on user behavior is helping to shift the web design industry toward an object- oriented design approach”. Web design agencies are processing images, text and URLs to automatically shape them in to functional and unique websites. All are familiar with the “Grid” – a service that analyzes content to find out the perfect layouts, fonts, graphics and colors that best fit your website by making intelligent design decisions. The colors for the design are picked out of the images that you uploaded. Grid claims to have built a new technology that will help the ordinary web master create professional websites in a matter of minutes. The Grid also has the ability to recognize faces. Challenge for Web Designers According to some experts, the artificial intelligence is actually a threat for web designers as it replaces the web design work done by designers. However, this cannot be true, as despite the technological improvements in the artificial intelligence space, machine learning cannot replace the human designer and his intelligence. The fact is that as of now both are complimentary. This is because, website building platforms rely on web designers to train them to learn and understand user demands and behavior and then create web designs that focus on users’ specific needs. The abilities of artificial intelligence powered websites are presently limited; but with technological improvements taking place, more complex and better-designed websites are expected to surface. There are also limitations in the selection of layouts and color and AI websites are reported to take longer time to load . Google prefers sites that load within 5 seconds and any site that takes longer to load is looked down upon by Google. Besides, the present artificial intelligence based tool like the “Grid” is best only for small businesses or individuals who need a brochure style website. Companies that need a website with several links and complex architecture will surely need the specialized skills of a programmer. Artificial intelligence will need further technological developments to be fully able to replace the expertise, creativity and adaptability of a skilled web developer. But developers would be advised to become more familiar and adept at using artificial intelligence as AI becomes smarter and gets more acceptance with the passage of time.
