Artificial intelligence and machine learning has now become an inherent part of our daily lives. From answering financial queries in a bank to suggesting what flights to buy online or to even deciding what treatment to receive for cancer, AI has become ingrained in our lives as never before. The potential is enormous and as in any revolutionary discovery, there are pros and cons and AI is no exception. There will always be challenges on the way in the initial stages and AI will bring disruptive changes and give rise to new problems that can challenge the economical, legal and ethic fabric of our society. Let us take a look at a few of the major challenges affecting the artificial intelligence implementation and look at the ways to minimize the associated risks and at the same time make sure that we take full advantage of this technology. System effectiveness depends on quality of input data Artificial intelligence and machine learning rely on data to analyze trends and behavior patterns to arrive at conclusions. The quality of the data then is of paramount importance as also the data needs to be widely representative and balanced. Erroneous data inputs could cause AI systems to make incorrect predictions that in a business or financial enterprise could entail huge financial losses. There is then a need to feed AI systems with accurate data that is representative of the elements involved. Artificial Intelligence leading to job losses One of the major complaints cited against AI implementation is that it will lead to large scale job losses and that sooner or later repetitive jobs will be performed by AI robots only. Employees could be relocated to positions that require more creativity; but this will only raise the productivity levels of companies. In addition, there will also arise new jobs requiring AI –related skills leading to more employment opportunities for such skilled persons. Issue of responsibility With AI implementation in place, it is difficult to put the onus of responsibility on any one specific individual for hardware malfunctions. Earlier, it was relatively easy to determine whether an incident was the result of the actions of a user, developer or manufacturer. Privacy Many technology greats have expressed serious reservation on AI as they feel that there is every chance of individual privacy being compromised. Unless companies make great efforts to protect user data and regulate the information collection and sharing practices, they will end up doing more harm than good. The use of technology must be regulated to curtail and eliminate all unnecessary attacks on individual privacy. In addition, from the user perspective, they should be circumspect in sharing information on the internet, as a lot of fraud is taking place regularly. . AI bereft of human emotions Artificial intelligence is unable to exhibit the type of emotions that humans are generally credited with – like love or hate and as a result, it cannot become intentionally benevolent or malevolent. Autonomous weapons at the hands of wrong persons can wreck havoc leading to mass casualties. Stephen hawking, Elon Musk and Bill Gates among others have expressed serious concerns about the risks posed by AI. They have contended that AI has the potential to be more intelligent than any humans and this is dangerous. Though there are a number of challenges associated with AI that needs consideration, AI is here to stay and is poised to change our lives for the better. The increasing adoption of AI in every sphere is a testimony to the immense benefits it brings forth.
